UAE public schools to teach Mandarin
September 3, 2017, 6:05 am GMTStudents at some public schools in Dubai and the northern emirates will have the choice of studying Mandarin during the 2017/18 academic year.
According to a report in The National, the UAE Ministry of Education, which oversees public schools in Dubai and the northern emirates, has hired 24 teachers and four education managers from China to lead a Mandarin language pilot programme across 10 public schools.
The language option will be open to students from Grade 10 onwards.
Ministry of Education assistant undersecretary Marwan Al Sawaleh said: "China is growing into one of the largest economies in the world and, throughout our strategic relationships with them, we have seen their technology evolve in terms of research and development. Their overall education system and policies are really expanding and becoming strong, and we are trying to open this opportunity for our high school graduates."
The new academic year will begin on September 4 for public school teachers, and September 10 for students.
