Saudi schools defy ban on fee hikes
October 19, 2015, 5:58 am GMTSeveral international and private schools in Saudi Arabia are defying the Ministry of Education's rules against fee increases, Saudi Gazette reported.
According to ministry sources, some schools charge as much as SR1,000 (US $266) for opening a registration file. Parents are also charged for activities such as swimming, karate, and other sports.
Parents are also forced to buy textbooks, uniforms and other school supplies at very high prices.
This goes against the ministry's directive to schools to stick to a fee structure approved by the regulator. The school fees paid by parents should also include all educational services provided to students, except transport.
Parents have also been urged to report an illegal increases in fees not authorised by the ministry.
