ADEC launches teacher licensing pilot project
September 21, 2016, 12:25 pm GMTThe Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) has launched the Teacher and Educational Leadership Standards (TELS) UAE Pilot Project ahead of the national licensing scheme to be rolled out in the UAE.
The National Qualifications Authority had announced earlier this year that the proposed professional licence for teachers in the UAE is expected to be introduced in 2017 and fully implemented by 2021. A six-month pilot project was expected to be announced this academic year.
The first stage of the project will offer professional development sessions for 400 teachers from 17 public and private schools in Abu Dhabi.
ADEC has partnered with the Emirates College for Advanced Education (ECAE) and its Continuing Education centre to provide PD and testing services for teachers.
As part of the TELS project, teachers will be fully oriented on the national licensing teaching schemes upon the completion of 12 modules across four standards. They will also be expected to complete a standards based assessment in order to ensure full understanding of the licensing processes.
More information about assessments and modules was not made available.
Dr Mohamed Yousif Baniyas, higher education executive director and head of the TELS UAE Pilot Project Committee said: "Licensing teachers will improve their overall status while providing them with further professional development opportunities and career paths. Teachers will be offered mobility, while the status of their work will be further elevated to ensure quality education."
Any shortcomings during the pilot project will be ironed out before mandatory licensing commences in 2017.
According to ADEC, TELS has been designed to improve mobility across the public and private sectors for school teachers. The initiative is also expected to help improve the quality of education in the country.
For Dubai teachers, details of KHDA's pilot programme are expected to be announced next week.
